Archaeological Linear Sites
Records
Information
The Antiquities Section of the Utah State History maintains a master list of linear archaeological sites in the State of Utah.
Guidelines and information on the recording of linear archaeological sites in Utah can be found at the
Utah Professional Archaeology Council’s (UPAC) website. The Utah State Historic Preservation Office has endorsed these guidelines.
We have organized two master lists of the archaeological linear sites to ease searches
for resources.
The first list is organized numerically by county based upon the site’s smithsonian trinomial. The second list is organized alphabetically by site name.

The two lists are results of Utah State History working documents. Please contact an antiquities staff member if you find a discrepancy or have a question.
Additional Information on Linear Site Records
- If you need to request Smithsonian site numbers for a linear site please follow the instructions here. Please include the name of the linear resource in the request. The online list is only periodically updated- please check with an Antiquities staff member if there is a question.
- Although a site number may have been assigned to a linear site, we may not yet have a copy of a site form associated with the site. If we do have a copy of a site form associated with the linear site, it is also possible (or likely) that the form does not directly record a section you are particularly interested in.
- A complete archaeological literature search may not turn up all linear sites found within your prescribed area. Although a number may be assigned to a linear site within your project area, if the resource has not been directly recorded in your area it will not turn up spatially in your search. Please consult the UPAC linear sites guidelines to assure all linear resources are properly assessed.
- We do not assign segment numbers to linear site numbers (e.g. 42TO1077.3, 42TO1077.4). When completing a site form for a segment of a linear site, the site number should be listed with the smithsonian trinomial first, followed by “segment” (e.g. 42TO1077 segment, not 42TO1077 segment 2) with no segment number defining notation following.
- The names provided on the two linear sites lists are names provided by the archaeologist recording the resource. Beyond the SHPO consultation process, UDSH does not have the time or resources to check the accuracy of the names or the other recording issues.
- Most linear site recordings take place in conjunction with the field archaeologist, the land managing agency, the State Historic Preservation Officer, and the linear sites guidelines (referenced above). The Antiquities archaeological records staff is usually unable to assist in defining linear site definition, site scope, or other site recording issues. Please consult with the resources and persons listed above.
- Please consult with your land managing agency on for additional specifics pertaining to linear resources occurring on their land.
