Most archaeological work completed in Utah requires an Archaeological Project Number. This number helps manage and track reports generated by fieldwork in Utah.
Project Numbers are generally obtained prior to fieldwork and can be received by contacting Arie Leeflang or Deb Miller. The following pertinent information will be required: organization name, project title, principal investigator’s name, field supervisor’s name, counties involved, and landowner status.
If, as a result of fieldwork, archaeological sites are identified and reported, site numbers can be requested from the same source. Utah site numbers are based in the Smithsonian trinomial pattern, defining state number, county, and sequential numbering. The associated Utah State Project Number will be required for this assignment.
