When an old building doesn't work for its original function anymore, it can find new life. Lots of buildings in Utah have made a spectacular comeback in a new role. Here are some great projects, many of them profiled on the Utah Heritage Foundation website.
Maeser School, Provo - Built in 1898, this elementary school now houses low-income seniors. The project took advantage of both preservation tax credits and low-income housing tax credits.
Stratford Hotel, Salt Lake City - A classic hotel now has low-income apartments and ground-floor retail. It also has solar panels on the roof! This project gained tax credits for preservation, low-income housing, and energy conservation.
Artspace City Center. Salt Lake City - The old ZCMI warehouse is now artist studios, commercial space, and living spaces.

Silver Star, Park City - Old mining buildings now house the Sundance Institute and Sundance Film Festival.
Fuller Paint/Big D Building, Salt Lake City - This paint and glass warehouse was transformed by Big D Construction into light-filled, environmentally sustainable corporate offices.
Moab City Center - Moab renovated its Art Deco middle school to become environmentally friendly city offices.
University of Utah Honors Center, Salt Lake City - An old army buildings now houses the university honors program.
Scowcroft Building, Ogden - An old warehouse now houses the IRS!
